Doug "Diego" Rhodes runs a hotel and ranch near the railroad on the road to the town of Urique.  He has been exploring (rafting) the Río Urique and has found a four wheel drive road that avoids driving all the way around to the coast.  He can arrange shuttles on this run which starts at the town of Urique.  He also can provide lodging.  It is rather difficult to drive to his hotel (and the town or Urique) but detailed information on the roads is provided on his website.

Hey Tom I am new here but familiar with Copper Canyon. I figured I would give you some more info. Doug Rhodes website is Mexicanhorse.com and his the name of his ranch is Paraiso Del Oso. The ranch is located in Cerocahui and is the most expensive place in the area. The price of a room there is 185 U.S. dollars a night. The food is very good and you are treated like you are staying at your friends house. That price includes 3 meals per day that you eat at the table with Doug and everyone else that is staying in the hotel. Its pretty neat. To get to Cerocahui you can either take the train from Creel to Bahuichivo where Doug can pick you up, or drive from Creel depending on how much rain they have had or what kind of vehicle you are in. I have just finished up putting a vehicle together specificaly for kayaking this beutiful area. I plan on heading back in Dec. for a scout trip of roads and access points so the Summer of 09 trip will be more productive.
